Men's Track Team Has Strong Showing At a seven-team meet in Spartanburg on March 31, the Polk County men’s track team earned 176 points and a sound victory. Other team scores were Lan drum 113, Christ School 91, SCSDB 85, Thornwell 17, Lockhart 6, and Jonesville 4. The seven individuals and the relay team who took first place spots made valuable contribu tions toward the Polk County win. In field events Derrick Twitty won the shot put at 37'10", Kevin Davis took the discus with 126'1", Otis Miller won the high jump at 5'10", and William Burnette's 36'2" topped the triple jump. In running events, Otis Miller (54.37) and Robbie Phillips (2:16) won the 400 and the 80 respectively. Seth Peoples placed first in two events: the 1600 at 4:54 and the 3200 at 10:26. The 1600 relay team of Mike Rogers, Charlie Culbreth, Scott Culbreth, and Otis Miller earned top points with a time of 3:52.7. Five other Wolverines scored in field events: Kevin Davis - shot (36'1 1/2' - 2nd), Derrick Twitty - discus (89'11" - 3rd), Gavrick Carson - high jump (5’8" - 2nd), Otis Miller - long jump (19' - 4th), and Brendan Palmer - triple jump (34'8" - 4th) and pole vault (8'6" - Sth). In running events, Polk County earned two more scores. Chad Lanford and Robbie Phil lips placed second and third in the 1600 with times of 5:01 and 5:05 respectively. Lanford also ran the 400 at 58.31 (Sth place) and the 3200 at 10:37 (3rd place). Scott Culbreth and Tra vis Gilbert took second and third places in the 800 with identical times of 2:17. In the 200 dash, Gavrick Carson placed third in 25.02, and Tyrone Miller placed sixth in 25.58. Jason Denton took fourth place in the 3200 with a time of 10:51. The 400 relay team of Rogers, Twitty, Carson and T. Miller ran a time of 48.57 for third place score. Also participating for the Wolverines were Chris Bradley iiot - 25'6"), Rocky Jackson iscus - 77"11"), Mike Rogers 00m - 12.52), Chris Boles ole vault - 8'), Alan Edwards ole vault), Jeromy Crocker 600 - 6:44), Charlie Culbreth 00 - 60.31), Jeromy Morgan 00 - 2:31), and Eric Baum- berger (3200 - 11:50). Due to a lengthy basketball season for several tracksters, this was the first meet for a full Wolverine team. Coach Alan Peoples said the team was off to a great start and was looking forward to an outstanding sea son. He praised Otis Miller for good performance in the meet, especially in the 400. He also congratulated Chad Lanford for qualifying for the regionals in the 3200m run. Lanford joins Otis Miller, Seth Peoples, and the 3200 relay team, who have already qualified. -Community Reporter WANTED: Horses or/mules to break.
